Spring Clean Your Oral Hygiene Routine: 5 Tips for a Healthier Mouth
Spring is a perfect time to reset your oral care habits and refresh your smile. Updating your routine now helps prevent decay, gum disease, and staining so you can enjoy a healthier mouth all year long. Here are five tips to get you started.

Does the arrival of spring make you want to clean out the clutter and refresh your home? It's also an opportunity to refresh your health habits, and your oral hygiene routine is a great place to start.

“Spring cleaning” your dental habits can lead to improved oral health, brighter teeth, fresher breath, and a reduced risk of cavities and gum disease. This season, our team at Austin Advanced Dentistry is ready to help with personalized oral hygiene guidance, professional cleanings, and preventive care.

Regular home care combined with consistent professional support is key to long-term oral health. Here are five tips to spring-clean your oral hygiene routine and keep your mouth healthy all year long.

1. Refresh your daily brushing routine

Brushing your teeth twice a day is one of the most effective ways to remove plaque and prevent decay — but did you know your technique matters just as much as frequency?

Make sure you’re using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. And if you can’t remember when you got a new toothbrush, it’s probably time to start fresh. You should replace your toothbrush (or brush head) every three months on average.

Brush for about two minutes each time. While you’re brushing, angle the brush toward your gumline to clean both your teeth and gums.

2. Get in the habit of flossing

Your toothbrush can’t reach all the way between your teeth, and flossing is the best way to remove plaque and food particles that get stuck there. Even if you brush faithfully, skipping flossing can let plaque build up in tight spaces and cause issues like tartar buildup, gum inflammation (gingivitis), and bad breath.

Use about 18 inches of floss and wrap the ends around your index fingers. Guide the floss gently between your teeth, making sure to get under the gums on both sides. If you find traditional floss tricky, consider alternatives like floss picks, water flossers, or interdental brushes. Remember that consistency is what matters most!

3. Rethink your mouthwash

Adding an antimicrobial or fluoride mouthwash can enhance your oral hygiene routine, especially if you are prone to bad breath or have gum sensitivity.

Antimicrobial mouthwashes help reduce harmful bacteria that contribute to bad breath, plaque buildup, and gingivitis. Fluoride mouthwashes can help strengthen teeth and provide extra protection against decay. If you’re not sure which type of mouthwash is right for you, our team can help you review your options.

4. Hydrate and snack smart

The foods and beverages you enjoy have a direct impact on your oral health, and making smart changes can help keep your mouth healthier.

Start by drinking plenty of water every day. Drinking water keeps you hydrated, but it also helps wash away food particles and neutralize acids produced by plaque. Staying hydrated also supports saliva production, which is your body’s natural defense against decay.

Choosing water instead of sugary drinks like soda and juice helps you avoid cavity-causing bacteria. In the same way, swapping candy for fresh fruit supports both systemic and oral wellness.

5. Keep up with professional cleanings

If it’s been longer than six months since your last teeth cleaning, book an appointment this spring. Brushing and flossing at home are essential for a healthy smile, but they’re not a replacement for professional dental cleanings.

Professional cleanings are the only way to remove hardened plaque (tartar) in hard-to-reach areas. At Austin Advanced Dentistry, our skilled hygienists effectively remove plaque and tartar buildup.

Our dentists check for early signs of decay, gum disease, and even serious conditions such as oral cancer. We can also address stains, tooth sensitivity, and any other issues you might be experiencing, and our goal is to help you maintain long-term oral health.

This spring, set the stage for a healthier mouth, fresher breath, and a brighter smile with a refreshed oral hygiene routine. Start with solid daily habits, support your routine with smart hydration and nutrition, and stay up to date with professional dental care. Ready to get started?
